Sonja Kay

Art Therapist

ANZACATA Registered

“My interest in therapeutic work developed while supporting my daughter through her mental health challenges and while navigating my own major life transitions. These experiences have given me a deep respect for the courage it takes to seek support and taught me that talking isn’t always what people need.” Sonja Kay.

Sonja Kay is an art therapist and practicing artist with experience providing therapeutic support across private practice, community, and hospital settings. Her work is informed by training in art therapy and body-based therapeutic modalities, with a focus on how creative and somatic processes can support psychological wellbeing. Sonja holds a Master of Mental Health (Art Therapy) from the University of Queensland and is a registered member of ANZACATA.

Sonja works with school aged children, adolescents, adults, and families. She has experience supporting individuals who have experienced trauma, as well as those managing anxiety, stress, grief and loss, life transitions, identity changes, self-esteem concerns, chronic pain, and emotional regulation. She also works with neurodivergent clients and individuals with a range of mental health diagnoses, in collaboration with other health professionals. Her therapeutic approach is client-centred, trauma-informed, and collaborative.

Sonja integrates concepts from ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), CFT (Compassion-Focused Therapy), MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) for chronic pain, and crisis-support frameworks. She provides a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment where clients can process unconscious and conscious experiences and emotions through both verbal and non-verbal expression. Artistic skill is not required to participate in or benefit from art therapy.
